The BMJ is seeking an experienced investigative journalist to join The BMJ’s Investigations Unit as an investigations editor, responsible for generating, commissioning, writing and editing compelling and original investigative feature stories.
Over the past 10 years, BMJ investigations have uncovered research fraud and misconduct, led to changes in regulatory and clinical practice guidelines, and appeared on the front page of the New York Times as well as prominently in other global publications. We are currently expanding our busy unit and are seeking an editor to help fulfil our ambitions.
Working with the Head of Journalism, you will research and develop investigative leads, commissioning and editing high-impact features, including strong cover stories for the journal. You will also develop a pool of talented freelance writers and liaise with our legal team and the journal’s editors to handle sensitive articles and to coordinate linked content.
You need to have the skill set to take a story idea and do the initial research, and the journalistic background to think how the story could be told in a way that would work as compelling, fact-based journalism that would resonate with our global medical readership and create impact and change. Our aim is not just to highlight problems but to generate solutions.
To be the successful candidate, you will have familiarity with medical and scientific research and publishing practices, and have a broad knowledge of the big issues in contemporary medicine. In addition you will take responsibility for The BMJ’s investigation features in print and online, under the guidance of the Head of Journalism and in line with the strategies for the section and journal as a whole.
Responsibilities
- Generate original and compelling investigative feature story ideas for all BMJ platforms
- Plan, develop and edit features, including strong cover stories for the print journal
- Develop a pool of talented freelance writers
- Report and write top quality features and other agreed content to agreed targets
- Liaise with legal team and editors to handle legally-sensitive articles
- Edit copy to length and within deadline
- Work with Investigations Unit team and features colleagues to help joined up planning of online and weekly print features, and respond to quickly to topical events
- To manage a budget for investigations content
- Maintain a broad knowledge of the big issues in medicine and contribute actively to team discussions
- Managing and handling confidential information
- Work closely with the production team on images, podcasts, videos, and info-graphics
Qualifications
- Bachelor of arts or sciences undergraduate degree
- Experience at a senior journalism level
- Significant experience working in investigative journalism
- Substantial experience and expertise in editorial decision making (e.g. commissioning, selecting, editing)
- Experience working on stories related to big issues and controversies in medicine
- High level editing and writing skills
- Excellent people management in order to work with external freelancers and BMJ production staff
- Networking skills
