Founded in 2010, the online marketplace known as Fiverr
started off with a bang by providing a platform for freelance artists to sell
and show off their work. But as the years have passed, failings in the
structure have driven away a number of freelancers and plummeted the quality of
the company.

Headquartered out of Tel Aviv, Israel, Fiverr was once a
prominent platform for creators. It’s open marketplace concept connect people
in need of graphics, coding, or even music to connect in real time with creators
across the world who boasted a wide variety of talents and skills for insanely
good prices. With most gigs starting at $5.00 for a design, it made professional
graphics attainable and easy to understand.

For a time, it worked pretty well. But it wasn’t long until
designers and creators alike started walking away from the massive platform;
driving down the over quality of content shared on the site.

The beginning $5 price tag seems like a good deal for some
basic artwork; and if you were someone who wanted more artwork or more
complicated designs, it’s to be expected the artist would tag on additional
charges. However, Fiverr takes 1/5 of all money raised by the creator through
services, not including the processing fees. This meant that for every $5
project the artist completes; an average of only $3.58 actually made it to the
creator’s bank account.

When a piece of content could take an hour or more to make; a
difficult decision had to be made: charge more upfront, or find a new platform.
A simple search of the internet leads to numerous articles advising new freelance
artists to stay as far away from Fiverr as possible; with tales of withheld
funds, stolen intellectual property, and simple not enough clients to keep the
lights on.

As many freelance creators left the site; the quality of
what was left behind plummeted. Repeated incidents of artists simply overlaying
existing logos over new backgrounds; or taking the money and not producing any
content abounded. Unless you are willing to pay extremely high prices for your
content; which is what Fiverr initially was created to avoid.

So if you are a small business or individual looking for
some artwork, website building, music, or any other kind of content; or perhaps
a creator yourself, it would more than likely be best to steer away from this
particular site.
